Forty Years of Life in America Side A

by C Alexander

/
1.
Sentenced to death / you stand up to make your speech / unable to really speak / you can try all you want, but nothing really matters / you can try all you want, but nothing's gonna happen / Facing the stage / you say what you need to fast / afraid too much time has past / Aghast at applause / you sit down and turn your back / a clanging sound and everything turns black / you can try all you want, nothing really matters / you can try all you want, nothing's gonna happen / you were the one who always had a vision / you were the one we always needed to stand / youngest of three / your family would leave at night / you'd sleep without any light / dead in your sleep / you'd wake up to scream, alone / relieved there was no one home / fall back asleep / impossible to explain / the faces in your dream (melting and strange) / here I am / there you are / lost at sea / gone too far / indigo bloom / the skyline evaporates / the birds scatter to their fates / yellow and green / the world starts to say their prayers / as if there was someone there / wordless and sad / you don't know why you are here / it cycles to a noise but won't cohere / you can try all you want / but nothing really matters / you can try all you want / but nothing's gonna happen / you were the one who always had a vision / you were the one they always had to put down / here i am / there you are / lost at sea / gone too far / here you are / there i am / lost at sea / god damn
2.
Don't bother knocking on the door / waiting for the host to arrive / they've seen your type around before / gleaming with the sun in their eyes / the truth (or something like it) / well, it's not the kind of thing that would sell / and if you think they'll take a chance / i don't think you know them too well / so what do you seek? / and why do you stay? / are you waiting for the bottom to drop? / the maniac is still in charge / look at how their baring their teeth / always cleaning something off / always something worse underneath / always have their eye out / and you're such a perfect dish for the feast / and if somebody dares protest / then it's ten times worse at the least / if i only could say / all the things that i think and know / at the speed of my thoughts / and if only my thoughts would slow / so they'd stand on their own / so the words came in the right row / i would finish my thought / and let everyone know / how fast the fuse is burning and how much of this is going to blow / we're foiled by the easiest obstacles / to find on the ground / we're tripping on banana peels / chasing tethered money around / but I'm learning how to make the first explosion / that will not make a sound / good is when you're fighting back / best is when you're tearing it down / so why do i seek? and why do i stay? / i'm waiting for the bottom to drop / well we've simply gone too far just to turn back now
3.
Now that we see how the colors bleed through you / young in a time when a push has come to a shrug / dancing graceless above us / unsubtle winks and a curling finger / you always wanted the best for us / but you never did what was best for us / "failure is not always failure" they tell you / but second will always feel like a failure / the readout isn't showing a number / a question mark and a four of spades / and i never knew what was best for us / but I always did what was best for us / every word you say is just a knife that's in my back / when you dance i feel the same / when someone - i never their name - / pushed me over / pulled my hair back / stole my glasses / pinned my arms down / and they told me what to expect / and they promised / and delivered / so go on and move your feet / snap your fingers in your phony retreat / i was lying / i remember / all their faces / and their parents / and their parents' grinning faces / and i won't say "I forgive you" / still everyone's looking for tickets to ride / (well, maybe not everyone; I am not them) / but I felt like I've wanted the harvest to grow / without breaking a sweat, without plunging a blade / "Sorry" is never a strong enough word / I would say it with pennies, at least it would count / there are times where I wanted to push back and was still / I regret every punch that I never threw / they weren't natural / they were decisions / exactly like everything else.
4.
This county highway at night can eat you alive / i've been on it for years and never could find / another person in all of this time / look at the leaves as they cascade onto the road / look at the animals shivering in the cold / nothing that finds its way here will every grow old / so where are you gonna go / you little thief / aren't you praying for swift and premature death? / thumbs in your eyes til there isn't anything left? / didn't you say i was out of my depth? / look at the animals scream, unable to see / look at him wriggle his leg to try and get free / I would rather see what is coming for me / so what is it going to be / you little thief / I have always known that it's safer inside / and I have nothing to hid / you little thief

about

SIDE A notes:

1. This is the first of four parts.

2. I've wanted to make a big project for a while now. Steve Farley told me if I was going to do this I had to title it something preposterous: I'm turning 40 this year; I've lived in the United States the entire time. The title stuck.

3. It is entirely understandable that a title like this would connote a great broadside against the system; however, while my frustration with the political organization of my country has doubtlessly colored my mood and outlook for the worse, none of the subjects of these songs are politicians (or functionaries thereof).

4. These songs are, however, about cruelty, powerlessness, and the "meanness in this world." One could say they're about insisting on living a life of meaning in an universe that rewards nihilism.

Unless they're about self-loathing. (Or the apocalypse)

5. In any event, if these songs seem to comment on the current COVID-19 crisis, that is entirely accidental, but I know how you feel.

6. The songs on Side A date from mid 2017 to about Christmas of 2019. The organ track of "Sentenced to Death" was actually the first thing I composed and recorded in the apartmet where The Meaning of Feeling Good was finished and mixed. Lyrics were revised up to the moment of recording, winter 2019-2020.

6a The music for "You Little Thief" (now that one is about self-loathing, I can tell you) came out of a jam session with my colleagues in Odd Random: Chris Rott, Jim Chorman and Josh Morman. They are accordingly credited. All rights reserved by the creators.

6b. All other music and all lyrics by Christopher Alexander, (c) 2020 I Survived Music (ASCAP).

6c. Lyrics reprinted with kind permission of myself because it's my publishing and nobody cares.

7. I love it when my collaborators contribute, and when I have greater means, I plan to employ them more often. As such all of the performances, recording, mixing, and mastering on this release is my fault.

8 . Side B to come in July. It will probably contain mostly old songs about unrequited love.

9. These are homemade digital recordings rendered in 96k/24 bit resolution. A splendid time is guaranteed for somebody.

10. In the honors of McCoy Tyner, John Prine, and Adam Schlesinger.
